Virginia Cavaliers defender Emily Sonnett

The Virginia Cavaliers made a strong run this season and seemed capable of returning to the final of the NCAA Women’s Championship. The No. 1-ranked Cavaliers had a successful regular season, defeating defending NCAA champion Florida State, then falling to the Seminoles on penalty kicks in the conference tournament. And, the Cavaliers delivered efficient performances in the tournament before being eliminated on penalty kicks by Rutgers Friday. Cavalier senior defender Emily Sonnett, the DC Soccer News Women's College Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 30, did her part as Virginia (19-1-3) compiled its 15th shutout against Rutgers.
